OPENING VIBES
By Brian Upton
As I sit down to write this introduction, I can’t help but feel the undeniable connection between every story we’ve curated for these pages. In Santa Cruz, winter doesn’t bring blankets of white snow — it brings the white foam of crashing waves and massive swells. It’s the heart of surfing season, and in this issue, we dive deeper into that culture than ever before, showcasing some mind-blowing photos that capture the ocean’s raw power. The images leave me in awe of the natural world we call home. And yet, what stands out most is the sense of purpose in the pages—calls to action, an ode to tradition, a celebration of resilience and above all, examples of what makes this life meaningful: human connection.
In this issue, we look at the Santa Cruz coastline through the eyes of Nik Strong-Cvetich, Executive Director of Save The Waves Coalition. Our town is where surfers chase waves and as a community, we grapple with the real effects of climate change. His vivid memories of bomb cyclones and crumbling cliffs remind us that preserving the beauty of our shores is a mission that touches not only Santa Cruz but every corner of the globe.
Next, local educator Ruby Ann Vasquez shares her inspiring journey from a young girl discovering her cultural roots in Mexican Folklorico dance to becoming a passionate community leader. Her story shows how pride in one’s heritage can empower the next generation to stand taller and dream bigger.
We’re also honored to dive into the legacy of the O’Neill family. Neal Kearney takes us behind the scenes with Jack O’Neill Jr., revealing how this iconic Santa Cruz brand continues to innovate while staying true to its roots. It’s a story about family, tradition and the enduring power of the sea.
Good luck not being enchanted by Maia Negre, whose serene depictions of nature evoke a quiet magic. Her art reflects the delicate balance between observation and personal experience — a theme echoed in this issue’s diverse lineup.
The relationships with non-profits are the cornerstone of Santa Cruz Vibes Magazine. 2024 was a monumental year for Black Surf Santa Cruz. Their joyful paddleouts and transformative ocean programs have redefined what it means to break barriers and build community in the water. Their story is one of unity, stoke and solidarity. I look forward to working on big things with Bella and her team in the new year.
We’ll also take a moment to breathe in the seasonal renewal of winter as Frans Lanting and Chris Eckstrom guide us through our final seasonal series from “Bay of Life.” From the first green shoots to the damp earth’s aroma, their words and images immerse us in the quiet magic of this time of year.
And for those with wanderlust, Ryan “Chachi” Craig whisks us away to Hawaii’s North Shore— the birthplace of surfing and a mecca for those ready to charge. Through his lens, we feel the electricity of the Seven Mile Miracle, where legends are born and memories are made. I’m continually amazed to have this guy as a co-owner here at Vibes. I love seeing the world (and this magazine) through his eyes on each issue.
Finally, we spotlight our friends at Barrios Unidos and BU Productions, a local gem blending cultural empowerment with artistry. Their work proves even something as simple as a screen print can carry the weight of social justice and healing.
As you turn the pages of this issue, I hope you feel as inspired and connected as we did putting it together.
See you in the spring!
Brian
